Human Factors Engineering (HFE) describes the application of human factors and ergonomics to the design of workplaces, systems and equipment. This helps ensure that safety critical tasks can be performed reliably, and that maintenance is carried out quickly and easily. This has a direct bearing on the overall safety of the asset, the welfare of personnel, and the operational expenditure associated with running the facility. As a result, industry regulators and operating companies increasingly recognise the importance of integrating HFE within the design of their greenfield and brownfield projects.
